On the island of Nozaki-jima, which is almost uninhabited now, there used to be two hamlets where Christians were hiding, Nokubi and Funamori. Churches were built in Funamori in 1881 and in Nokubi in 1882. The islanders and Nakata Tokichi, who was in charge of the Chuchi parish as its first head priest, requested Tetsukawa Yosuke to design and construct a church in Nokubi in 1908. The up-and-coming architect undertook the task and worked through his first challenge on a brick-built church.
